Healthy Food Delivered?

on Wed, 10/22/2014 - 20:22

I'm the typical housewife and mother. Halloween is coming soon and I'm all about decorating the house with pumkings and scary little paper ghosts. I even started making delicious pumkin cookies (pinterest is currently full of pumkin recipes!). But as much as it hurts me to say I still have to admit: I wish I didn't have to cook once in a while. I love baking, I love preparing breakfast for my kids but when it's time for dinner I would be the first to scream for help. Sometimes I just whish I didn't have to come up with new meal ideas and prepare and cook and clean up and...it's just too much (despite all the pumkin soup recipes for example).

So I was looking into something that could make my life a little easier. Obviously getting a cook is an option only very few can afford and I certainly can't. And take out food is the last thing I want to do. I've been strictly buying organic and healthy food. There is no fast food in my house and there shouldn't be. But there is one last option that could still make my life easier: a food delivery service.

Why I Think Food Delivery Services Rock!

At first I was skeptical. There are several food or dinner delivery services available in our area, and I tried them all. And I was surprised! Getting food delivered right to your doorstep, in fact, is amazing. Most services offer discounts if you order on a subscription basis. The service I'm sticking with now is called Plated. I don't want to go into all the details about how much it costs or how exactly it works. You can read about that in this plated review. But I will tell you how it changed my life!

I always was the kind of woman that is very much into healthy food. I'm maticiulous when it comes to picking the markets I shop at or when picking the veggies I want to put on the table for my family to eat. It's important for me to make sure that the ingredients are of high quality and that they are fresh. I always prefer organic. Now while some food delivery services don't use organic ingredients, I still prefer a service like this over ordering something else. It saves you ton of time and the ingredients are fresh. All you have to do is to cook it. You don't have to think about what you cook because the recipe comes right with the ingredients. It make my life heaven! Three times a week we now have dinner from plated. The other four days I just cook whatever I feel like. Yes, also pumkin soup lately (this one was delicious). Nice side effect: I enjoy cooking more, now that it's less work.

What else is in it for me? Well, I have more time to spend with my family in the evening! As the ingredients come prepackaged and everything there is less of a mess in the kitchen. I don't have to cook for an hour anymore, it only takes me 20 minutes or so. Afterwards I just enjoy spending time with my kids. It has been a win win for everyone :)

Why Slow Food Should Be Part Of Everyone's Life

on Wed, 10/22/2014 - 19:47

Yesterday I found this incredibly interesting YouTube Video about slow food. Slow food is about apreciating food in our lives, it's about giving it the time and attention it deserves. And it's foremost about taking the "fast" out of food.

It was around five years ago that I decided to grow my own vegetables in the backyard of my house. And I haven't looked back ever since. Of course, I still buy food at the farmers market as I can't cover my family's intake on vegetables fully but my perception has drastically changed. I don't buy vegetables at the supermarket anymore and I only buy organic. In times when chronic diseases spread like the pest in the middle ages, it is time to recognize that in fact the food we eat has a drastic impact on our health. It's time to realize that the types of foods we eat as well as how we prepare it and the context we eat it in has a longterm effect on our overall health. As we need to give vegetables time to grow, we also need to take time in preparation. Slow food is a lot more than just eating "slowly". It's about appreciation and taking things a step back to where they always were supposed to be.
